Camelids

Camelids are even-toed ungulates: hoofed mammals, distinguished by their elongated double-toed splayed feet. They are mostly large, plant-eating animals that differ from ruminants, such as cows and sheep, in several important ways: they have a three- chambered stomach (as opposed to four), a divided upper lip with each half separately mobile, a tooth in the upper part of their jaw that is isolated form the rest, and elliptical red blood cells.

The Arabian Horse — Strong and Elegant

The Arabian horse is one of the oldest breeds in the world. It is the object of much fascination and attention from equine enthusiasts. As suggested by their name, these horses hail from the Middle East. The breed is so old that Arabian blood flows through the veins of most all modern horses. Today, this breed of horse is found all over the world, including the United States, Europe, Australia, South America and even Asia. One of the most attractive characteristics of this breed is its versatility. These horses were used as war horses, race horses, exploration horses and more. They are bred for endurance, speed and agility. View videos of Arabian Horse here

Train Your Cat to Use the Litter Box

Establishing the relationship between you and your cat can either fall in place smoothly or take patience and time. Our job as owners is to make the cat understand what we will and won’t accept. With setting your boundaries you are showing him that you rank #1 when it comes to hierarchy. It’s about getting him to use the litter box instead of the inside of your closet or your best cozy comforter! You may want to shuffle the litter around for him a bit, in clean litter of course! This gives him something to mimic.

Dog Vitamins – Are They Healthy?

I’m overly concerned about my dog’s health. I feed him the best food and take him to the vet for check ups; but it’s not enough. I want to make sure my dog is as healthy as possible. I’m looking into dog vitamins. Does anyone know if they’re effective for dogs? One site actually discusses how various dog vitamins have helped dogs but it’s just one site. I need to know if there is a specific type of vitamin I should be giving my dog. I don’t want to feed him vitamins and end up finding out they’re full of harmful stuff. Are there any vets out there or other dog owners who have had experience with vitamins? I need to know!

Iowa boat ride cures dog’s fear of water

My dog Killer loves it when I start exploring the south central Iowa tourism attractions. When she first started coming along with me on some of my fishing trips she was deathly afraid of water so I never worried about her jumping from the boat. Then one day as I was in the boat and my son was on a paddle wheel pontoon, he wanted to take her for a ride so I passed her over to him. She got up on the fender and he peddled away. Well the fender was a little slick and she slipped off and fell into the water. She was forced to swim about ten yards to the shore where she crawled out and shook off. I went and picked her up and set her back in my boat and she was a changed dog. Instead of looking out at the water and shaking she stood with all four feet firmly planted and looked like a hood ornament. The rest of the trip whenever we were in the boat she took that same stance as if she were lookout and actually controlling where the boat went. What I thought was going to make her fear water even more turned out to be the thing that let her get over her fear.

Like most people I love my dog. She goes with me everywhere I go and enjoys trips and loves to meet new people. I was on a trip to the bureau of central Iowa tourism and of course Killer came with me. Let me explain that Killer is a poodle and terrier mix and weighs ten pounds soaking wet. She got her name because of the ferocious was that she protects her territory, all bark and no bite, but she can put on a good show. Anyway, we were in the truck heading down the road and I had an accident. Just a small fender bender, but I needed to get out and exchange information with the other driver. Of course I left Killer in the truck. While I was outside she was running all around the cab of the truck checking on where I was. When I was finished with the other driver I went to get into the truck and Killer had punched the electric lock button. There were my keys still in the ignition and Killer just looking up at me with a “what did I do?” look. The was the last time I ever left her in the truck with the keys. Lesson learned the hard way.

One of my favorite Minnesota vacations is a trip to a dog park just south of Moline. They have a lot of activities for the dogs to participate in. This isn’t your normal dog park where there is just a fenced in area where the dogs can run and interact, oh no, this place is special. There are trainers on staff from eight to five every day that help the visitors with their dog problems. There is a wonderful training course where you have all kinds of obstacles for you to teach your animal how to get around. You can teach your dog to climb a ladder, cross a bridge, and slide down a chute. There is a big yellow plastic tunnel that you can teach your dog to enter and run through even though he can’t see the other end. Of course you have all the normal training available also, the mundane sit, fetch, speak, and so on. The staff trainers are very friendly and helpful. They are well versed on the different varieties of animals and how they react differently to different stimuli. If you are a dog owner and want to have a fun time and come home with a better pet, this is a place I would defiantly recommend.

Pets need Vacations

Have you ever considered taking your pet on an Illinois vacation? Pets, especially dogs, can have a high stress life as well as humans. Think for a bit about how your dog must feel sitting in a kennel for a week. There he is with all these strange dogs and strange people. The smaller breeds seem to be the most nervous for some reason. Maybe it’s just because of their size in comparison to the rest of the animals or it may just be that it is just in their genes. If you take your dog with you they remain a whole lot calmer. Most dogs actually enjoy a trip in the car, in fact mine will just take a nap on a long trip. The bigger dogs love hanging their head out the windows. In today’s world where bottled water is sold everywhere, long trips really aren’t a problem. We people need to get out of the care every couple of hours anyway, that’s a perfect time to walk your pet. I usually stop and buy a bottle of water, hook the leash up, grab the bowl, and take a walk. After the walk is done I set the bowl down and give her a drink.

Pomeranian Dogs

Developed in the Prussian Region of Pomerania, Pomeranian dogs were once much larger than the tiny fluff balls we know today. Poms didn’t become popular in England until the late 1800’s when Queen Victoria brought some back with her. Today this breed is still very popular both as a show dog and a loving companion.

The Pomeranian has been recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1888 where it is a member of the Toy Group. In order to meet the AKC breed standard, a Pomeranian must be between 7 and 12 inches tall and weigh between 3 and 7 pounds.  With the proper care, your Pom can live to be 15 years old.

This breed is recognized by it’s fluffy fur, pointed ears that stand up and wedge shaped head. These little dogs always seem to be smiling and have an intelligent expression with dark, sparkly almond shaped eyes, teeth that meet in a scissors bite and noses that either match their fur or are dark. They also should have a curly feathered tail that fans forward of their backs. The chest and neck of the Pomeranian should have an abundant ruff. They have a solid or parti colored coat.   Coat colors for the Pomeranian are  Brown, red, cream or white, orange, black and blue.

Dog Training A Puppy

There are certain times of the day when puppies display very active behavior. This is most frequently observed in the morning and early evening, with the later usually the most extreme. During these times, owners find that they have very little control over their dogs. When this happens, remind yourself that it is normal dog behavior and patiently work though the problem.

The Complete Guide To Buying A Horse

Buying A Horse

There are plenty of horses you shouldn’t buy out there. Some have bad habits like biting, kicking or cribbing which is what horse fanciers call the act of chewing on the edge of a stall. Others are not well trained. Although they may know some of the basics, they are only green broke, meaning they may be willing to wear a saddle, but do not know all of the signals that a thoroughly trained horse knows. Do You Understand Your Horse?

Your Horse Guide

The Icelandic horse (pony-sized but called a horse) provides an opportunity to compare contemporary and historical breed appearances and behaviour. Introduced by the Vikings into Iceland, Icelandic horses did not subsequently undergo the intensive selective breeding that took place in the rest of Europe from the Middle Ages onwards, and consequently bear a closer resemblance to pre-Medieval breeds. The Icelandic horse has a four-beat gait called the “tölt”, which equates to the rack exhibited by several American gaited breeds. Horses explained
