Our dog had gotten into a scrap with another dog and ended up at the vets for stitches. The vet outfitted our dog with one of those large plastic hoods that fit around her neck, to prevent her from biting at the stitches. We thought it would be hard to keep her from removing the protective hood, because it was hard plastic, unwieldy and unfamiliar. Not so! She decided this hood was a fashion item, prancing around as though she was the cat’s meow in terms of special attire. She absolutely loved this hood.

After the wound had healed and the hood was no longer needed, my daughter felt that our family pet seemed a bit deflated without her fancy vet’s garb. This inspired a round of dog dress up games, that went on for years.

I came in to call Gabriella for lunch and found her and our fashion conscious dog, going through my daughter’s closet, grabbing knit caps, doll bonnets, outgrown, elasticized skirts and t-shirts. Never mind that our dog was a medium sized German Shepherd. The skirts were pulled on over her hind legs, t-shirts squeezed over her head and fitted through her front legs and frilly bonnets tied around her chin. The dog dress up games were on and our silly dog loved every minute of it!

As pet owners, we like to include our pets in as many activities as possible. This definitely is true when it comes to holiday pet costumes. As I write this, Halloween is fast approaching. It is a neighborhood tradition to dress up the family pets and let them go trick or treating with us. Of course, we make sure there are special animal treats for them and I even carry a separate bag so the treats don’t become tricks!

With every passing year, I have seen some incredible Halloween pet costumes that are simply amazing! When I was a kid, we dressed our dog in make-shift costumes of whatever was laying around the house. The real bummer was nothing really quite fit! And Muffy didn’t really appreciate my football helmet on her head. But that was then…

Last year was the first time that I attended a Halloween party. I dressed my 5 month old in a furry baby monkey costume, which kept her warm. My husband and I procrastinated a little too much when it came to our Halloween costumes. It would have been nice to do a jungle or animal theme to match our daughter, but because we waited too long, we were all something unrelated. When I first heard about dog Halloween costumes I burst out laughing. Who would go to the bother of dressing up their family dog for Halloween? Ridiculous – pathetic, even – was my reaction. The dog stuff included very elaborate outfits for the holidays. Velvet dresses, satin off the shoulder cocktail dresses, and the more traditional knit sweaters. There were also collars that were studded with sequins and stones. I could tell that the sales clerk was not thrilled with this new merchandize. I commented that our female dog would certainly prefer precious stones. When I said this she lead me over to the fine jewelry counter and showed me a display of precious and semi precious collars. I could not believe what I was seeing.
