This is the burgeoning number of those taking on dog breeding who are, we think, jumping in without sufficient thought, dog handling experience, and skills.

Before You Start Dog Breeding Consider These Things

If you are thinking about starting dog breeding, you should take doing so very seriously.

Please don’t go into dog breeding with a primary aim which is commercial. Please do breeding you care about the healthy development of your chosen breed. Do select your favorite breed, one that you know well, and in which you know well the favored traits of the breed and can commit yourself to the improvement of that breed.

That way, each litter that you bring into this world should be an improvement over the last one. You should be prepared to plan for each litter before it is born. Providing for a caring home should be your top- most priority, and not in any way the maximization of earnings.

Starting A Breeding Program

Things are not always going to go well for you in your dog breeding. Are you going to be emotionally prepared for some of the unfortunate consequences which will inevitably befall all breeders. Are you prepared to see your bitch or her puppies die? Female dogs do encounter problems during birth.

The impulse to create which is so urgent an attribute of the human spirit can and does find its release in the breeding of dogs. In his ability to ordain the existence of a new organism and to order what it shall be like, the breeder realizes a power that is but little short of godlike.

Bringing together the germ plasma of two dogs from which to mold a third to his own liking, he becomes a veritable sculptor in living flesh. Any critical verdict about his creature as a work of art must rest upon whether or not the breeder has employed the right materials in the right manner best to approximate the breeder’s ideal dog of any specific breed.

For a fine dog may well be a work of art. However, if the dog be merely the result of the unplanned, chance union of the parental * gametes, the words art and artistry can hardly be applied to its production. The person who passes as breeder of such a one is not a breeder at all but merely the possessor of the dam at the time of her copulation with the sire.

It is futile to deny that good dogs do so arise. Indeed, it was not until recent years that enough was known of the reproductive processes to permit of more than merely the mating of the best available male to the best available female and trusting to luck (and her excellence was considered as of only minor moment).

This is agreat audio book for kids: ‘Come on Seabiscuit’ written by Ralph Moody and narrated by Jim Weiss.

Black Beauty is the autobiography of a horse, who narrates it’s own story. Through various owners who ask different tasks of Black Beauty, he grows and has numerous adventures. He goes from being a riding and carriage horse through being a mistreated town cab horse to eventual happiness in a secure home. Notably, the animal keeps strength and good temper throughout his suffering and the story was extremely influential as pro-animal propaganda but it is also an extremely exciting and moving children’s story.

Black Beauty was the only book written by Anna Sewell, although its continued popularity among children, particularly girls, has justified that effort. Sewell was, remarkably, paid only twenty pounds for the book and it was published three months before her death, in 1877. However, its immediate success gave her great pleasure and she died in the knowledge that the book had indeed encouraged people to treat animals less cruelly.

Naturally, Rottweilers are a tailed dog. Pumpkin and brown rice baked in a pie, raw kale and turnip greens tossed in a salad, big bowls brimming with unsweetened applesauce… this may not seem like the ideal Thanksgiving feast for people but it was a menu made in heaven for the midday meal for the ducks, chickens, and one lucky turkey at the Eastern Shore Sanctuary. A good time was had by all at the Sanctuary’s annual Thanksgiving feast for the birds.

Located in the heart of a rural region dominated by the poultry industry, the Eastern Shore Sanctuary & Education Center is home to a host of birds rescued from dangerous circumstances, including local “broiler” chickens found on highways after jumping or falling from trucks headed to the slaughterhouse, hens from an egg factory that was shut down due to environmental violation, roosters confiscated by police from illegal cockfighting operations, and birds found in parks after escaping from religious rituals involving animal sacrifice.

The sanctuary’s sole turkey arrived with a number of ducks and hens who were almost sent to auction when they became a burden on their disabled caretakers. Thanks to the timely intervention of a neighbor (and the financial assistance of a long-time animal rights activist) the birds came to the sanctuary instead of going to slaughter. The turkey is called Cara, which means “friend” in Irish, because she was so deeply devoted to the young ducks with whom she had been living that she cried pitifully when she was briefly separated from them and could not calm down until she was reunited with them.

If you like small dogs with big dog attitudes, you may want to consider a Yorkshire Terrier. These dogs are so sure that they are just as big and bad as the other guy, that they will not hesitate to take on a Great Dane. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Yorkshire Terriers aren’t lap dogs. The Yorkie can cuddle with the best of them.

While surfing around the internet, I stumbled upon something so fantastic that it immediately got my attention… In fact, I discovered something sooo amazing at first I thought it was “too good to be true” like most things are.

You see, a few months ago, I was actually doing some research on Dr. C.W. Emmens one of the most acknowledged and influential Marine Biologists of the last century and of all time. I noticed that most of his work was available and accounted for with the exception of one of his most important pieces of work ‘How To Keep And BreedTropical Fish’. 

Well, this got me curious and so I started digging a little deeper and I started to send off a few emails asking questions… Unfortunately every, road I seemed to head down was a dead end… until a couple of weeks ago that is…

By a stroke of luck, I emailed my story to one of my favorite site’s webmasters… as it turned out he had an old copy of this almost impossible to find book - it was right under my damn nose. After numerous emails I finally got him to mail me his copy for more than I’d like to tell my wife about – if you know what I mean J
