German Shepherds are extremely intelligent animals that get very attached to their human families and can make the most loyal and dedicated pet you have ever owned. But be ready to spend a lot of time with your dog as the German Shepherd requires a lot of attention. German Shepherds are highly obedient and not easily distracted, but due to their self-strong will must be trained by a firm hand. German Shepherds are active and happy dogs . They are extremely intelligent dogs that take to training very well.

German Shepherds are working dogs, and like to have something to do. If you have time to spend playing, or if you can give your pup something to do, like bringing his food bowl at dinner or keeping squirrels out of the yard, he?ll be happy and healthy. German Shepherds are even capable of learning commands in two languages. Once they learn something, it sticks. German Shepherds are powerful and well muscled with a slightly elongated form. German Shepherds are a large-breed dog which are generally between 55 and 65 centimetres (22 and 26 in) at the withers and weigh between 22 and 40 kilograms (49 and 88 lb).

German Shepherds are highly prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal disorders. It is recommended that any potential buyer ask for a warranty from the breeder that their dog has been evaluated and cleared for hip dysplasia. German Shepherds are protective of their family and wary of strangers, but they are not actively hostile to them, and once you have won them over they will be your friend for life. German Shepherds are easily identifiable by their large head, ears which stand straight up, wedge-shaped muzzle and compact legs.

So what dog breed is right for you? Large dog breeds? Small dog breeds? Is choosing the right dog breed important? Should you get the most popular dog breed or one that fits your lifestyle? It’s a fact that not all dogs are created equally, and it is also a fact that not all dogs meet the standards of their particular breed. People familiar with dogs know of the snappy traits of the Golden Retriever and the sweet, loving nature of the Newfoundland which goes against everything that you thought you knew about these gentle giants. And, as with anything else in life, there is always the exception to the rule, but thankfully, there are enough of the dogs that do follow their breed traits and standards to make them worth exploring when you are looking to bring a dog into your family.

It must be said that dog breed traits are just merely guidelines to aid you in evaluating the type of dog that will suit your needs but like people, dogs are individuals that have different personalities and temperaments so, dog breed traits may not fully nor adequately describe each individual dog. It is best to always evaluate each individual dog on its own merit, but please keep any potential traits that might seem problematic to you in the back of your mind.

Adopt a puppy from the shelter

Why spend thousands of dollars on a Thoroughbred dog?

You want a high strung and neurotic mutt or one who will love you for saving him from euthenasia?

While I like all dogs and puppies, I find that a visit to a pet shelter tugs at my heartstrings. Most often, these dogs aren’t thoroughbreds, but what we commonly refer to as ‘mutts’, a mix of breeds. To my mind, these mutts are the best!

Just as many pet owners have said in the past, I knew that I found my perfect pet once I saw her. The dog rescue adoption organization opened its doors and the first animal I saw was the one for me. She is a mutt who has been though a lot but she is absolutely beautiful and very affectionate.

The great thing about this pet is that she is already trained and she has been tested by an animal behaviorist. I know that this pup will do well with my kids and I know that the rest of her days will be happy. There is nothing more rewarding than a loving pet from a dog rescue adoption program.

You have to think about the ages of your children when you look at how to adopt a dog. Not all breeds do well with children, but you can’t always go by breed. What is great about going to an animal shelter when you want to adopt a dog, or a cat for that matter, is that they have already figured out what families each dog is suited for.
