Since the puppy will be spending a lot of time in his crate, you should put several of his favorite toys and treats in the crate for him. A long time ago I had an Airedale named Dirk. I remember the night we got him. It was the day before Thanksgiving. I was in New York City for business and my wife had picked up the dog that afternoon at the breeder. She worked that evening, so she carefully barracaded the dog into a corner, snuggled up in a blanket (well, she tried). I was to be home within an hour of her leaving, so all was good.

Did you ever see Kennedy airport on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving? It’s a madhouse, wall-to-wall college kids trying to make it home for the holiday. I still remember, approaching the checkin counter amidst the crowd and confusion. Mysteriously our tickets had a sticker placed over the flight number. Our flight was to Albany and then connecting to Buffalo, where we lived. The flight was something like 430, but the sticker said 1430. It took about 2 minutes to figure out that 1430 was an addon flight scheduled 4 hours after our planned flight. They planned to fly to Albany, return to JFK and then fly back as flight 1430! NO WAY!

As we stood in line I told my traveling companion to take the sticker off the ticket, discreetly. We were next in line for seat assignments, so having removed the sticker, the attendant diligently assigned us seats on the first flight 430. As we boarded the flight we sat low and quiet until the door was secured. We were on our way home.

I arrived about an hour later than planned, to find our new pet cheerfully greeting me in the kitchen. What a feeling it is to experience the immediate and unwavering friendship of a pet, “Dirk”, I said aloud. “I’ll call you Dirk.” He was an incredible dog, loving, playful, STRONG and grew to about 85 pounds! He and I became very close.
