Looking for dog parks in eastern Iowa

I am on a mission to find all the doggy parks in the eastern Iowa tourism region of the state. Bruno, my favorite K9, loves to go to these places and play with other people and dogs. Bruno is a medium sized English Sheppard, very social and very friendly but she wears me out too quickly. She loves to play what I call “stomp and chase” where she looks directly out you, stomps both of her front feet at the same time, and takes off running expecting to be chased. She then stops to let you catch up and if she sees you stop then she chases you. She actually learned this game when she was a puppy and I took her with me to visit a neighbor who had a cat. In the process of sniffing each other in the usual pet greeting way, Bruno stomped and the cat ran. About half way through the yard the cat decided that it had enough and came to dead stop. It stared at Bruno and turned around and started chasing her. It was Bruno’s favorite game after that. By the way, I know Bruno isn’t the normal name for a female, but that is a story for another time.

Iowa boat ride cures dog’s fear of water

My dog Killer loves it when I start exploring the south central Iowa tourism attractions. When she first started coming along with me on some of my fishing trips she was deathly afraid of water so I never worried about her jumping from the boat. Then one day as I was in the boat and my son was on a paddle wheel pontoon, he wanted to take her for a ride so I passed her over to him. She got up on the fender and he peddled away. Well the fender was a little slick and she slipped off and fell into the water. She was forced to swim about ten yards to the shore where she crawled out and shook off. I went and picked her up and set her back in my boat and she was a changed dog. Instead of looking out at the water and shaking she stood with all four feet firmly planted and looked like a hood ornament. The rest of the trip whenever we were in the boat she took that same stance as if she were lookout and actually controlling where the boat went. What I thought was going to make her fear water even more turned out to be the thing that let her get over her fear.

Small Dogs With Hypoallergenic Fur

Are you a dog lover? Do you live in an apartment or small home? Do you have allergies? A small dog with hypoallergenic fur might be the answer for you. “Hypo” is a Greek suffix meaning less or below. A hypoallergenic dog might still put out allergens, but at a much lower level. A few dogs that take up less space, making them better for apartment living, are the Silky Terrier, the Havanese, and the Coton de Tulear. These dogs are all considered of the “Toy” size by the America Kennel Club.

Making a Small Wood Birdhouse for Kids

You may be wondering what else is making a small wood bird house good for except that you have a new and cute way to give a new look to your outdoors or providing temporary shelter to the different kinds of birds that visit in your garden.  One of the best things making a small wood bird house could do for us is that it could provide us with something to do with our kids thus, giving us a nice and productive quality time with them.

When it comes to making a small wood bird house, it is also one of the most advisable activities that you could pull off when you are a teacher at camp or a pre-school teacher who is trying to teach kids about taking care of nature.  Aside from that, you not only can find a new way to teach them, but also keep them busy and have a productive time while they are in the camp or in school.

Vacations mean a trip to the kennel

I had my dog “Killer” with me on one of my many Iowa vacations and I found that she really enjoyed traveling. Killer is a small dog so she wasn’t a bother as far as finding room to take her along. Before when I went out of town I would take her to a kennel and I was lucky enough to find one she really liked. She is a very social dog and gets along well with people and other dogs. This kennel also offered a dog grooming business and during the day they would allow her to run free around the office. They also had a set time to go out and run in a pasture that was nearby. One good thing about having the grooming business was one time Killer went out to the pasture for her play time and unfortunately it had rained that day. In her chase and play with the other dogs she got terribly muddy and that was the afternoon I was to pick her up. The kennel owner simply took her into their grooming room and gave her a bath. The only downside of that was the shampoo they used was sickly sweet smelling, meant much more for a woman than a man.

Holiday with Pets

Many pet owners have the same problem every year: they want to go on holiday but have no one to look after their beloved pets. So they stay at home only dreaming of visiting foreign countries. However, today at many popular tourist destinations you will find hotels, apartments or bed and breakfast that actually accept visitors with pets. In most cases these are dog or cat friendly accommodations. Of course these accommodations require certain behaviour of your pet and so it is not very advisable to travel for example with a very young puppy.

There is an amazingly wide range of holiday destinations available that are pet friendly. Most of them only accept dogs, but there are evens some destinations that welcome animals such as birds or horses. All you have to go to find such a holiday location is to ask your travel agent or simply to log on the internet where you will find a vast variety of offers available. On most of the sites you can also book your holiday online, which is very easy and convenient as you can compare prices. To make your holiday perfect you should also try to find out about dog friendly restaurants or pubs and dog-friendly attractions around your hotel. This can be done online too.

From luxury holiday to a city trip, there are many options for a holiday with your pet. When you do some research you will soon realize that you don’t longer need to stay at home because of your pet while other people go on holiday.

Animal Bedding

Almost anyone with pets finds the need to pamper them just a bit. Though cats and dogs can sleep just about anywhere they want, they will sleep in animal bedding if they are given the choice. Dogs are more likely to do so, but both of my cats will sleep in the bedding I got for them on occasion. These things are made just for the comfort of the animal, and I’m not sure how they know they are made just for them, but they seem to figure it out rather quickly.

The most common animal bedding is a small bed that has a ring around it. This keep the animals warm when the curl up in it, and they seem to love it. Some dog owners that have larger dogs will buy a very large flat pillow made just for this purpose. When buying these, size is not all that matters. They should be easy to clean and they should be something that is not easily destroyed. Dogs love to play, but they don’t always know when they are ripping into the wrong thing.

Western Iowa dog pool

How would your like to take your dog on a group swim? The Western Iowa Tourism Association is planning to have a massive K9 event on one of the eddies alongside the Missouri river. Most of the public swimming areas do not allow pets in the water so some pet owners have gotten together to build a swimming area where dog lovers can swim with their pets. The project began with a small lake being carved out of the ground next to the river. When the hole was dug tons and tons of sand were hauled into the area for beaches and also as a bottom to the lake. Then there were plants planted all around the outside of the public area. This was done to act as a filter for the runoff during rainstorms. Next the Missouri water was “plumbed” in to fill the lake. The result is a wonderful recreation area with two miles of continuous sandy beach where master and dog quite often play Frisbee or just jog and swim. There is an event planned to introduce this lake to the public this summer. Admission to the lake is just two dollars per human and one dollar per pet.

Puppies For Sale

Most puppies for sale are healthy, but there are some that will sell sick dogs for high amounts of money. They can do this when they have breeds that command that type of money, but they should never be selling anyone a sick puppy unless the buyer is aware of the situation. This is a scam that has been around for a long time. It seems to come and go in waves. There are some things you can do to protect yourself if you aren’t sure the puppies for sale you have found are up to par.

Understanding Cat Behavior

Most cat owners know the basics of cat behaviors. Kittens are often full of energy and love to play. Most cat owners know that this is because they are learning to ‘hunt’, even though they really have no need for this skill in our modern world. What looks like play is actually a life survival skill for that species. This makes kittens a lot of fun, and this is probably the most common of the cat behaviors that everyone sees in a new kitten when they bring them home for the first time.

Pony Saddle | Riding A Horse Serves Many Purposes

Horses have been used, ridden, treasured and coddled for hundreds of years. There were horses around when the ancient Greeks and Trojans went to war. The most important warriors often were depicted riding a horse into battle while the less important people used their own feet to do their duty. Horses were around when the Pilgrims landed in North America, and they are still useful animals today. Some people are viewed riding a horse just for pleasure. Some of these people are riding a horse that they own while others spend time on horses that they have rented or borrowed from somebody else.

Why Buy A Dog Coat

Since Mother Nature provides the dog with its own outer fur coat you might think why bother with anything else. Little dogs, however, lose their body heat more quickly than the bigger dogs. Small, short-haired dogs like the Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers have almost nothing in the way of nature to keep them warm in colder temperatures. For these dogs it is like a necessity to provide them with something extra for those cold, blistery days outside. For other breeds, such as a thick-coated Shih Tzu it can be entirely optional, but will also help the smaller sizes to retain their body heat in colder temperatures.

When purchasing a dog coat for your dog use the same good sense as you do when purchasing your own coat. Look for good construction. Wool and micro fiber fabric retain warmth. If you live in a climate that experiences cold winters look especially for materials made of wool and fleece. Be sure the coat covers the dog enough to keep him warm.

The dog coat should fit the dog comfortably around the neck, chest and armholes. Pay special attention to these areas and measurements when purchasing a coat. Dog coats don’t use stretch like a dog sweater does. Exact fit will be more important than when purchasing a dog sweater.

Shopping Dog Parks

I spent the last couple days visiting dog parks in a 5-mile radius of my house. Normally, my weekend is a little more people oriented, but my vet said that my pooch needed to socialize with other dogs more often. So, off we went to the parks. She still seems shy around other dogs (not like one weekend will change that), but some of the parks were really nice and the people seemed friendly. There were even a couple of cute human specimens for her master to socialize with. I’m going to post my reviews of the dog parks we visited later this evening.

Missouri invites pets to the state

Pet lovers are a big part of Missouri tourism and the state tourism board is taking measures to make the state more pet friendly. The rest areas along the interstates now have a place to walk your dog. They do ask that you pick up after your animal, but there are convenient containers for waste disposal. There are also more and more dog parks being built around the state. That seems to be a growing trend and you can see why. You can take your pooch to a place where he can run and play without a leash. You do need to keep some close supervision on your animal while you are there because there are possible dangers. Not all dogs want to play with other dogs and some dogs version of play are considered hostile by other dogs. Some of the better dog parks have different closed off areas for different sizes of dogs, that is an excellent. Even though your eight pound poodle will play with a bulldog, that bulldog’s nip could be the death crush to your little loved one. With the little dogs being confined to other little dogs and the big dogs only having big dogs to play with, that isn’t nearly the problem.
