What is a Dog? An Omnivore or Carnivore?
There is debate on whether domestic dogs should be classified as omnivores (eater of both plants and meat) or carnivores (eater of meat only). A dog is neither reliant totally on meat protein – nor a high level of other protein to fulfill its basic dietary requirements.
Dogs can consume a large portion of vegetables and grains in their diet in addition to protein. Wild dogs eat easily obtainable plants in order to get essential amino acids in their diet. They also get vegetable matter nutrients from the herbivorous prey that they eat.
