I was recently searching for a pet friendly apartment in Los Angeles and found it to be a significant challenge. I have a friendly cat named Boots who doesn’t do much but lay around the house. The number of pet friendly apartments in Los Angeles was very small and required a great deal of searching. I was primarily looking for something in the North Santa Monica Bay area (Santa Monica, Venice, Marina Del Rey) or West Hollywood. Another part of the problem is the exorbitant pet deposits that many apartment complexes want for tenants with pets. While the risk of problems and damage from my cat is much less than tenants with dogs, the apartment management companies see no distinction. Rent in Los Angeles is already so high that I really had a tough time paying extra for a pet deposit and some of the apartments even wanted a monthly amount as “pet rent.”
I eventually found an apartment in Brentwood, though I decided not to let the property manager know that I have a cat. The building is smaller and I figure the risk was low so I went ahead and leased the apartment without mentioning my cat. So far, as I expected, I haven’t had any problems. The only people who know I even have a cat are those that come into my apartment so my neighbors and the property manager don’t have any idea and I figure they don’t need to know if my cat isn’t causing a problem. I thought I would share my experience for other pet owners in Los Angeles who may be struggling with the same issue. I am an honest person by nature and don’t like deceiving people, but I can live with a little lie of commission considering the alternatives. While this method certainly wouldn’t work for someone with a dog, cat owners may want to keep this in mind.

Use Treats As Treats! And Make Sure They Are Healthy Treats.
Don’t just give your canine buddy “junk food”.
It likely sounds incredibly simple. Treats should be given as treats, not regular staples in the dog’s diet. The fact is that many people give their pets too many treats. All animals can have treats unless the vet says otherwise, but you have to give this to them sparingly.
Giving them too many treats can cause them to shy away from foods that they need in their diet. If they are filled up on treats, will they eat the nutritionally balanced food that you are given them as well? Chances are they will not.
In addition, most treats designed for pets are not healthy options in the least. Unless you make sure that you get your dog healthy treats. Most are filled with fats and other products that can easily cause the pet to become overweight. Don’t get these!
Instead of giving treats on a regular basis as a diet element, use treats for training purposes, for distraction from nail cutting and even as a way to reward your pet. Just limit the amount.

Perhaps you can’t have a pet at home, but you really want one. The solution may be to “adopt” a zoo animal in a sense. You can help to support the animal at the zoo, volunteer to help with things that need to be done or learn all you can and then volunteer to teach others about the zoo and what it has to offer.
Just think of yourself as the “adopted” parent of special animal, maybe a big cat or something like a parrott. You could tell all your friends about your new “pet”.ÂÂ
You could check with the zoo in your area like the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. They will probably be glad for the offer of help.

Most people spend a lot of time and thought taking care of their pets, but probably few consider the dangers of lawn diseases to their pets. Mollies are an easy to care for aquarium fish. In the same family as swordtails, guppies and platies, they bear live fish babies as opposed to laying eggs. This makes them easy for anyone to breed and, thus, beginning aquarists who want to try their hand at breeding fish.
Mollies should be kept in a tank that has at least 15 gallons of water. Make sure there is a good heater and gravel at the bottom. The water should be between 70 degrees and 82 degrees. Mollies are interesting because they can live in freswater or saltwater in your freshwater aquarium, you might want to add 1 tbsp of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water.

A few weeks ago we let the dogs out of their kennels to go for a walk. I put on their reflective dog collars because it was getting dark out. Our neighbor came over to talk with us and we lost track of the dogs. We heard the screech of tires on the road in front of our house. Our black lab came running up the driveway.

My love of cats is well known amongst our friends and relatives and I soon started receiving cat related items as gifts. I now have a curio cabinet filled with various cat statues and also have a great deal of jewelry with cats on it. For my last birthday I received a cat door mat and a new ceramic cat food dish. The cat door mat that I received is rather small and mat of rubber. I decided that this would be a good thing to use to place the cat’s food dishes on. I placed the cat door mat in the corner where the cats eat and put a decorative can on it that contains their food and then their food dishes and water bowl. It makes the area look more appealing and the cats seem to enjoy their new mat.

I like inventions that do things while you aren’t looking. I remember the awe I felt when I saw a self cleaning cat box for the first time. That means vehicle travel is not recommended. There are times when I have no choice though. I would think that auto pet feeders would be the answer to this, but I do have some reservations about them. What if they stop working while I am away? I have visions of my cats pawing away at the auto pet feeders trying to get food because they stopped working, and I would never know it.
