Pet Beds For That Extra Large Dog

My father, who is not extra large, had complained to me that one of the few problems he was encountering in old age was being stiff and sore in the morning. Once he said that it was easy to figure out what one of the problems might be. He had been sleeping on the same hard bed for the last 30 years. His mattresses have always been the same. Like sleeping on the hard ground. So what I did was get him a 3” dense foam mattresses with memory. What a change in the way he felt in the morning. While not totally eliminating all the aches and pains it did make him feel a lot better.

That experience started me thinking about our dog who was getting of and could definitely be considered an extra large dog. I had always assumed that the floor was a perfect place for him to sleep a rest. That’s how dogs were meant to sleep. Either outdoors or on the kitchen floor. Who would ever think that a large, tough dog would need a pet bed. Then thinking about the experience with my Dad I started observing that big old fido was looking a little stiff in the mornings and our morning walks were beginning to slow down.

Understanding Your Cat

This small article about cat facts on social behavior and interaction should help you better understand your pet. The behavior of cats is largely misunderstood, even by highly experienced cat owners. I hope you find this information helpful.

If there’s one trait that cat owners enjoy most, its the independent nature of their little feline friends. We should feel honored when a cat decides to gives us the time of day. Any cat gleefully asking for a head rub or a belly scratch is too much to resist for most cat lovers.

Have you ever looked at your cat and wondered what your cherished pet is thinking? After many years I still do that quite frequently. I also wonder why cats do what they do and act as they act. Cats can be a mystery however, much of their behavior can be easily understood if you know the reasons behind.

Unlike dogs, domesticated cats do not engage in the formation of packs. When forced to live more closely to one another they normally would in the wild, cats will often resort to time sharing their territory when ever possible.

Adopt A Norwegian Elkhound And Be Ready For Noise

If there is one major drawback to owning a Norwegian Elkhound it is their tendency to bark. They were bred to bark and have not lost that trait. Worse yet, their bark is high-pitched and intense, the kind that will have your neighbors calling animal control if your pet is left in the backyard unattended. But fear not, they can be trained to at least curb this annoying habit.

Pets, Ours is our Cat, Mercy

Pets, they are the wonderful addition to a family that make the home complete.  At least that is what our cat, Mercy, thinks.  She truly believes that if it weren’t for her we just wouldn’t be a very good house….she may be right!  A pet is the final addition to a happy home, at least in this house.

She is not a cat that likes company, she just loves her dad, mom and one of our kids.  The rest of the world can just stay away from her.  Not that she is mean, she just doesn’t come around much when there are other people at our house.

She demands attention from my husband, they have a routine, she comes and gets him at around 5 every day and he goes to “the blue chair” and she jumps in his lap and they spend the next little while together.  She demands his attention and is really good at making her demands known.  Regardless of what he is doing she will stand there and call him until he pays attention.  I could probably learn something form her.

5 Mistakes New Puppy Owners Make

New puppy owners tend to make the same mistakes. Most of them are just simple things, but they make all the difference in the world to how well the puppy does at later becoming a happy, useful member of the family pack and a good dog citizen in the world.

No one would dream of bringing a new baby home from the hospital without even deciding where the baby will sleep, but puppy owners make this mistake regularly.

Here are some mistakes you can easily avoid. Some will mean the difference between life and death for your new pup.

Don’t make a timing mistake. It’s important for the puppy to have a chance to bond with his new pack, so try to find a time to bring him home when people will be home for several days in a row, like Friday of a long weekend in summer. Don’t choose Sunday night late the day before Dad’s going out of town for a week, Mom’s working on a big presentation at work and Sally’s in the final 2 weeks of rehearsals for the play she’s starring in.

Avoid one of the new puppy owner’s typical big problems by starting your pup’s potty training BEFORE you ever take him into the hours. Take him from the car directly to THE spot you want him to use (which you have sprayed with some great stuff you got from the pet store to “mark” the spot.) Now, wait until he pees somewhere near that spot and give him a treat and just a ton of affection and praise. Now you can go inside and show him the house and his space in it. Encourage him to drink water and then bring him back to THE spot in an hour and wait (it may take a little while, just hanging out near THE spot … another good reason to get new pups in summer). When he does it … another treat and another ton of praise. And come back out ever 1-2 hours. If you do this for the first few days, Consistently, he will get it, and you will save yourself a load of hassle. Add the command “Go Potty … good place” every time and you’ll have a head start on later civilized “go on command” behavior when he’s older and has more control.

And don’t worry about winning his love. It comes pre-installed.

Arizona Bird Watching is a Memorable Experience

When you think about Arizona, you tend to associate it with things like the desert and the Grand Canyon. Arizona has also long been depicted as a place where one could easily spot several different types of lizards and scorpions. However, there many opportunities for other sightseeing adventures, and one of those sightseeing adventures is Arizona bird watching.

Where to Find the Best Bird Watching in Arizona

Although there are many different areas throughout Arizona in which to go bird watching, there is one part of Arizona that is by far the most popular. This popular spot is Southeastern Arizona, and in places like Miller Canyon, bird watchers gather to observe hummingbirds.

Cat Breeds for Cat Lovers

Some cat breeds are low maintenance, while others require frequent brushing. Cat breeds are not as different from each other as different dog breeds but there are still some mighty different types of cats out there. Some cat breeds are people-pets and there are other cat’s breeds that prefer to be aloof and independent. Some cat breeds are more prone to spells of silence, but sometimes individual cats of the more vocal breeds are also not very talkative.

Cats Are Unique

Cats have amazing abilities to hear, see and smell. Cats will also turn their ears back when they are playing or to listen to a sound coming from behind them. Felines will also use contact to communicate urgency, from gentle reminders of feeding time to a demanding insistent rub. Cats involved in a conflict may extend their fully bristled tail straight into the air and turn their body sideways to appear larger.

The Miniature Pinscher – An Energetic Dog Breed

If an energetic dog is you style, consider the fact that some consider the Miniature Pinscher to be the among the most energetic dog breeds in the world. Of course that’s just an opinion, but if you ask anyone who has ever owned one, you’ll likely get a similar sentiment. The Min Pin is  nothing less than a dynamite energy machine, which would explain his nickname “The King of the Toys”. But that’s not to say they aren’t loving lap dogs either. They are that too, and much more.

Owning A Tropical Fish Tank

At first, the thought of owning an aquarium full of tropical fish may seem simple and easy but the tropical fish tank is not one that just needs to be filled with water and then simply add some tropical fish, hoping that they would swim around merrily and life would be a breeze for them, from then on. Such is not the case because the tropical fish tank requires a lot of maintenance and these fish need a lot of caring, especially as they can live on for years and years. The tropical fishes are not your everyday fish (such as a goldfish may be) and they are certainly more exotic and a nice species that are not only costly, but double trouble as well.

Pet Massage? It Helped my Dog Walk Again

If you ever go through the shock of seeing your dog dragging his back legs behind him, know that you’re not alone.

This happened to me when my little dog Sammy ruptured a disk the day after Christmas two and a half years ago.

Of course, I took him to the vet right away, but short of surgery, which didn’t end up being much of a viable option, there was nothing to do but try to nurse him at home.

Part of the process of nurturing him back to health involved pet massage. There was no guarantee that Sammy would ever walk again, but the pet massage sure wouldn’t hurt.

Dog Training: Just as Important as Training Your Kids

It always amazes me when I see dogs that are just out of control. Their owners seem so frustrated, like they have no say in the matter.

My little dog Sammy was a mess when I adopted him: His hair was overgrown and matted, he stunk, and he had no manners. And he kept biting me!

He also became a little terror toward my older dog, Roby.

My vet helped me to figure out how to deal with Sammy, and now he’s the sweetest little love bucket ever. But it took a lot of loving discipline and patience, and “getting into his head.”

Pet Boarding is Essential Part of Ownership

Pets give us a lot of happiness throughout our lives. They give us companionship, loyalty, and unconditional love. That’s why I find it so disturbing when I see how so many people treat their pets. Often, pets are treated like objects. People leave them at home all day without considering options such as hiring a pet sitter to take care of them.

Pet boarding is not just a consideration, it is an essential. Pets depend on human companionship, and it should be a two-way street. If we are going to enjoy their companionship, we owe them the loyalty of making sure their needs are met while we are not at home. That is why whenever I’m going to be gone for more than a few hours, I try to use a pet sitter or pet boarding.

My dogs love going to the pet sitter for a “play day.” It’s good for their social skills, too.

For lots more information about pet boarding, pet sitting, and other considerations of dog ownership, see my website: Love Those Doggies. Ruff! Pet Boarding.

Want to Adopt a Pet? Consider This

There are millions of us who own pets and believe ourselves to be responsible pet owners. But most of us do not support the humane society or the local animal shelter. This is the responsible thing to do as a pet owner.

I am not suggesting that every pet owner needs to go adopt a pet from the shelter, but a monetary donation is a great way to insure that these programs can keep going. Also if you are a pet owner that breeds your pet, make sure that the people who adopt a pet from you are going to be responsible and will provide a good home to the animal.

There are some great tips about adopting pets here at my new website, Love Those Doggies. I hope you’ll visit for some great stories about pet sitting, pet boarding and adopting pets. Adopt a Pet.

Your Diabetic Cat — Can You Care For A Diabetic Cat?

If you have just been told that you have a diabetic cat, you may be afraid of what the future holds for your pet. The good news is that diabetes is not a death sentence for cats. Your cat may live a long and happy life with diabetes. All this requires is for you to care for your cat and provide the pet health supplies that he or she needs. The following information may help you understand what you need to do for your diabetic cat.

Regular checkups: If your cat has been diagnosed with diabetes, it is vital that you visit your veterinarian regularly. Your cat will need blood sugar checks to make sure that he or she is receiving the right amount of insulin. This should be done every 3 months or as frequently as your vet suggests. While diabetic humans can check their blood sugar levels at home, this is not possible with cats unless you buy a glucose monitoring system.

The American Foxhound – A Dog Bred To Hunt

Sure you know that George Washington was the first president of the United States, but did you also know he is also responsible for breeding the American Foxhound? Washington it seems was a hound lover, and by carefully breeding the hounds he imported from England with ones given to him by France, the American Foxhound was born. This scent hound was originally used to track Indians. But how does the current state animal of Virginia stack up as a family pet?

You Could Save Money If You Have Pet Health Insurance

In many families the pet, whether dog or cat, is considered just like another member of the family, and if a medical emergency arises no one would consider ignoring it. The main concern would be to provide good health care for the pet. Veterinary costs can be quite high, and if the medical emergency should occur at night time or during a weekend, the medical costs can really be prohibitive. A pet owner need not face this situation. This is why purchasing pet health insurance is a very good idea, as all your veterinary costs could be covered.

The History of Horses

Want facts about the history of horses? There are approximately 75 million horses abound our world today. Horses have a sharp sense of hearing, direction and smell. Horses like any other creatures were used long ago. The Bible, specifically the book of Job states that horses and horse riders used them in hunting ostriches. Horses’ drawings existed about 3000 BC. The text states training of horses for chariots. During Ice Age, horses roamed every continent excluding Antarctica. It is known that Persians, Chinese and Assyrians were skillful horse riders.

Brahmans of India claimed themselves as the first horse riders and Hittites of the Mediterranean were using horses for wars around 1,600 BC. The Egyptians used chariot horses to expand their empire; this is way backing 1650 BC. The kinds of horses used in Egypt are much different from the Arabian horses and Greeks mythology presented horses as sea creatures ruled by their god Posiedon. Posiedon’s winged horse named Pegasus is also written about in mythology.

Around 20 million years ago, horses changed in size and prehistoric horses weren’t leaf eaters. Read more in French at Vivre autrement and History of agriculture

Dog Training Techniques Produce Wonderful Results

An undisciplined dog is just as bad as an undisciplined child, but dogs are probably easier to train than a child because of proper dog training techniques.  People can find information on dog training techniques in a variety of places.  There are professional schools for dogs where the training techniques are used to make the dogs obedient.  Dog owners might take their dogs to these schools, and they might accompany their dogs during the training so they can learn good dog training techniques to use after the formal course is finished.

There are also some great books that clearly illustrate and explain good dog training techniques.  These books are available at the public library or a good bookstore.
