New painkiller derived from sea snail toxin being researched.

lA deadly sea snail found in the australian great barrier reef, called the conus marmoreus marine snail, contains a toxin that may dramatically alter how we manage pain.

University researchers have found that a component of the snail’s venom actually blocks pain receptors. It has been tested on animals so far and has been found very efficient at blocking pain.

One of the major advantages of this chemical found in the snail is that unlike conventional pain treatments such as morphine, it has no side effects such as dependence, drowsiness, nausea, and visual disturbances.

What Do Dogs Really Understand?

Dogs can understand a surprising amount of language and body posture, but they process information very differently from humans.

Their eyes respond very differently to colors and have a greater ability to see in low light. Their head muscles allow them to rotate their ears in order to quickly and accurately locate the precise source of sounds. And, of course, there’s that famous sense of smell.

Antioxidants for pain relief?

Choices in pain relief seem limiting at times. Over-the-counter pain killers sometimes don’t put a dent in your discomfort, but going to the doctor for prescription strength relief to alleviate pain might seem extreme as well. But new research published in the Behavioral Brain Research journal suggests that antioxidants might one day be used to limit discomfort caused by chronic pain. If testing is successful, instead of powerful drugs that can cause addiction, antioxidants will be able to provide safe pain relief without the worry of dependence.

Free radicals (unstable oxygen atoms) are at the heart of it all. Although, free radicals are produced naturally in the body, they are also introduced into our systems through sunlight, breathing and foods. At an elemental level, oxygen carries a certain number of electrons, allowing it to exist as a single element in any environment. The breakdown of oxygen in the body strips away electrons, which the element will try to recover from tissues and cells, damaging them in the process. High amounts of free radicals in the body have been associated with such health conditions as:

  • Alzheimers
  • Heart Disease
  • Numerous Types of Cancer
  • Cataracts
  • Arthritis

Keep Fish Alive With Floating Pond Heater

If you have a backyard pond, especially one containing fish, it may be wise to consider a floating pond heater. Living in an area of the country which realizes extreme temperature variations during the winter, a means of allowing poisonous gases to escape from underneath an ice covering will help keep your pond in a more inhabitable condition.

Rotting vegetation under the water can produce gases which not only cause a foul odor in the water, they can be deadly to fish and possibly to other plant life. By providing a hole by using a floating pond heater, through which these gases can escape, will make a healthier aquatic habitat.

Additionally, by providing a hole in the ice cover, needed oxygen will also be replenished into the water. Some folks may prefer to manually poke holes in the ice, but a floating pond heater can keep a hole opened without having to confront the ice personally.

5 Things You Need to Know Before You Buy Your First Puppy

When I was growing up, we had a dog – for a while. It didn’t work out because my parents didn’t realize that puppies need training. We were a cat family – and you can pretty much ignore cats. Gerbils Are The Perfect Pets For Children

Did you know that gerbils are fantastic pets for small kids? Last year we had a big house makeover. We did some kitchen remodeling, bathroom and Living room remodeling. After we realized we were done the kids asked us if they could have a pet. So we bought a pet. We found out that gerbils are really active during day time and extremely curious and friendly. Gerbils are desert animals of origin. They are very clean animals and tidy, which makes cleaning up after them a lot easier especially since our little Home remodeling experience.

Best gingivitis treatment is prevention using your own saliva!

Without question, gingivitis treatment is something that any of us would rather avoid. In the best of cases, treating gum disease or gingivitis involves the use of some antiseptic agent to destroy the infection that causes the problem. If the condition progresses to necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, then you will probably need so use some antibiotics for a week or ten days in order to kill the bacteria which cause the infection in the gum tissue. Such treatment is only necessary when prevention techniques fail and you fail to practice good oral hygiene while making certain that your mouth remains properly salivated.

The harmful bacteria responsible for causing gum disease and gingivitis problems are anaerobic in nature-anaerobic meaning “in the absence of oxygen”. These microbes like to hide behind plaque which then may harden into that stuff the dentist needs to scrape off during a cleaning: tartar. Anaerobic bacteria hide behind tartar because neither oxygen nor good oral hygiene like brushing or flossing can affect them.

Another substance that cannot reach the harmful bacteria responsible for gingivitis and periodontitis is saliva. Believe it or not, gum disease and gingivitis problems are rare when a person is properly hydrated and producing plenty of saliva. The fact is that saliva is the body’s first defense against the anaerobic bacteria because it can help control the bacteria population and prevent problems like gingivitis and periodontitis from ever starting. Human saliva happens to be rich in oxygen and will thus help slow the rate of reproduction for anaerobic bacteria. Your saliva also has these specialized enzymes which help the body produce antibodies that neutralize bacteria before they can cause an infection in your gums. Behaviors that will lower the rate of salivation due to dehydration are:

  • Smoking (also weakens immune system and the body’s ability to prevent gum disease and gingivitis problems before they start) deprives body of vital nutrients and also leads to lower salivation rates
